Law no. 2002-73 of January 17, 2002, known as the "social modernization" law, stipulates that "anyone who has been in the workforce for at least three years may apply for and obtain all or part of a diploma by having their professional and personal experience validated through the "validation des acquis de l'expérience" process".

The VAE procedure for obtaining a PhD can only be launched after sufficient professional experience. The PhD diploma recognizes the originality of a research approach, mastery of a research subject and the ability to implement a scientific research strategy and exploit its results.

- If the application is administratively admissible, the candidate can prepare his or her "scientific" file (check with the Doctoral School to find out what is expected), and the application will be examined by the Doctoral School's council.
- Once the manuscript has been drafted, and after presentation of its evaluation by 2 experts appointed by the Board, the candidate will be authorized or not to register for a thesis at a 2nd meeting of the Doctoral School Council.
- The candidate's file is presented to the Doctoral College's CD3 (Commission for Doctoral Exemptions and Derogations).
- Once authorized to register, the Collège Doctoral will draw up an estimate for the candidate. Following payment of the registration fee, the candidate has 2 years in which to defend his/her thesis.

the candidate submits his/her manuscript to the rapporteurs. If they agree, the candidate defends the thesis to obtain the title of doctor.
